The Orthodox Church of Georgia after the collapse of the Soviet Union

April 27, 2023, 8:00 am, Room UN-KCD (5th  floor) in the CMTF UP building, Univerzitní 22

Annotation, 1st lecture:

Joseph Stalin, who is undoubtedly one of the most important persons of the modern history, played also a huge role in development of Orthodox Christianity in the Soviet Union. It is especially important to note that During World War II, Stalin realized that he was able to use his knowledge and experience in religion to benefit the Soviet Union. The purpose of the lecture is to discuss how the Stalin’s Policy affected on the church - on the one hand the using of the Church as a political instrument and on another hand to describe the impact of Stalin's ecclesiastical policy on modern Orthodox circumstances.

Annotation, 2nd  lecture:

After several decades of the Soviet Union, the national movement in Georgia emerged as a mixture of cultural, nationalistic, religious, and political elements. To some extent, communist ideology has simply been replaced by so-called Orthodox Nationalism, for which any kind of belief or ideology is suppressed. In these processes, of course, the role of the Orthodox Church of Georgia was quite serious, which will be discussed at the lecture.

Lectures will be given in English.
